The American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners will hold a one day, “Train the Trainer” hands-on educational experience of recommended practices and standards for the welfare of cervids during removal of velvet and hard antler. This one-time event will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at an elk farm near Alexandria, Minnesota. The instructors are experienced cervid veterinarians Dr. Glen Zebarth and Dr. Cliff Shipley assisted by Dr. Cindy Wolf.

There is a minimum of 10 attendees required, and a maximum number of 20. Registration closes May 1, or when the class is full. Registration is filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

All airfare, ground transportation and hotel charges are the responsibility of attendees.

Hotel Information:
A block of ten rooms at each of two hotels are being held by AASRP until May 20. Attendees should ask for a room in the AASRP block when making their reservations. All hotel fees are the responsibility of the attendees.

Attendees should arrive in Alexandria, Minnesota on Friday June 19, 2015. Transportation will be provided between the hotels and the farm for a class start at 8AM on Saturday. The morning schedule includes information on chute design and handling facilities, tranquilization protocols for when chutes are not available, local anesthesia techniques, equipment and procedure. Lunch will be provided on the farm. Drs. Zebarth and Shipley will demonstrate recommended procedures for handling elk in velvet antler and hard antler as well as velveting of elk with both local and general anesthesia. Each attendee will have an opportunity to perform local anesthesia and surgical velvet removal on one elk. A question and answer period will follow the velveting laboratory, and Dr. Zebarth will describe nutritional and management practices to help clients obtain optimum antler production. Transportation will be provided back to the hotels after the laboratory.
