The 2012 AABP Program Committee welcomes you to the 45th Annual Conference of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners, September 20-22, 2012 in Montreal, Quebec Canada. This is an outstanding opportunity to participate in one of the most comprehensive scientific programs ever assembled on cattle disease and production.

The Amstutz Scholarship committee will once again be sponsoring a benefit auction at the 2012 AABP Annual Conference. All proceeds from this auction will go towards further enhancing the premier student scholarship program of the AABP. A live auction will be held during the Friday night social event. A simultaneous silent auction will be held with items on display and available for bidding online and in the exhibit hall.

Back again this year are small group Clinical Forums, which give you, the bovine practitioner, opportunities to "pick the brains" of experts on an array of clinical topics.

Regardless of your interest areas, you will leave the conference with information that you can take home and use immediately in your own practice … the kind of information that will make you a better bovine practitioner.

Veterinary technicians are invited to attend a two-day Veterinary Technician program which will be held this year on Friday and Saturday (the Friday sessions will be off-site). All veterinary technicians and veterinary technician students are invited to attend all conference sessions on Thursday and Saturday. Veterinarians are invited to any of the sessions for technicians.

We again welcome the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners, which will meet jointly with the AABP in Montreal. All registrants will be able to attend sessions scheduled throughout the week as part of the AABP and AASRP conference agendas … ideal for the mixed animal practitioner.

2013 International Sheep Veterinary Congress - UPDATED INFORMATION

The International Sheep Veterinary Congress (ISVC) Organising Committee has revised plans for the 2013 ISVC, originally to be held in Christchurch, New Zealand February 18th-22nd. Unfortunately, the Convention Centre and nearby hotels have been severely damaged by the recent earthquake, and with only two years to go before the congress, the organizing committee investigated other possible venues. It was determined that Rotorua, on the North Island of New Zealand, would be the best fit. The website <

In addition to a superb scientific programme, the Congress will feature tours incorporating visits of both farming and tourist/scenic interest through both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Dear Colleagues,

Firstly I would like to introduce myself. My name is John Smart and I am a veterinarian from the South Island of New Zealand with a particular interest in sheep health and production. I wish to bring to your attention the fact that the next International Sheep Veterinary Congress
(ISVC) is to be held in Christchurch, New Zealand from 18th - 22nd February 2013.

The history of these congresses is as follows. They are held every four years. The first congress was held in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1985.
Since then they have been held in, Massey, New Zealand 1989; Edinburgh, Scotland 1993; Armidale, Australia 1997; Stellenbosch, South Africa 2001; Crete, Greece 2005 and the last one was held in Stavanger, Norway in 2009. The meeting in Stavanger in 2009 saw the formation of the International Sheep Veterinary Association (ISVA). This body is tasked with promoting the interests of the veterinary aspects of sheep and sheep farming internationally and to facilitate meetings and scientific exchanges between members and individuals.

One of the goals of the ISVA is to reach out to those countries where sheep are farmed but for what ever reason, lack of awareness of the existence of these congresses for example, veterinarians from these countries have not been well represented at past congresses. Apart from the very first congress, attendance at these congresses has generally been between 300 - 500 veterinarians with an interest in sheep from approximately 35 countries around the world. This is large enough to create a very interesting scientific programme and exchange of ideas but not so large that the congress becomes somewhat impersonal. I can say from experience that these congresses are very friendly and I personally have made many lifelong friends as a result of attending as well as contributing to and receiving benefit from the exchange of scientific ideas that occurs.

Preparation for the Congress is well underway and more information can be found on our website which is now live. You can access this at www.intsheepvetassoc.org (the ISVA homepage) where there is a link on the lower left to the congress website itself. The website includes a feature to sign up for email updates and I strongly recommend that you do this so you can be kept up to date with all the congress arrangements and developments as they occur and the website is updated.

The general format of the scientific programme is that over the four days of the conference there will be a keynote or plenary paper each day and then three parallel streams operate for the rest of the day. There will likely also be some corporate symposia. The majority of the papers in the parallel streams are proffered papers and the first call for these will be made around August next year so if you or anyone you know of in your country has a subject that would be of interest to other sheep veterinarians then please keep a watch on the website for this call.

In addition to a superb scientific programme, the Congress will feature tours incorporating visits of both farming and tourist/scenic interest through both the North and South Islands of New Zealand. The pre-congress tours have become a much anticipated highlight of the whole congress experience and these tours should be no exception. Preliminary details of the tours are already available on the website.

For the accompanying partners of veterinarians a programme of visits and tours to some of the local attractions will operate each day and a full evening social programme for all delegates and partners will also be put in place culminating in the conference gala dinner on the final night where the much anticipated announcement of the winner of the bid to hold the next congress is announced.

Christchurch has an international airport with direct flights from many Australian and Asian cities. From South America and Asia there are direct flights into Auckland with a simple domestic one hour connection onto Christchurch. Hence for many of you the location of this, the 8th ISVC is reasonably "geographically convenient".

Traditionally the congress organisers do not pay for the proffered papers. In this way the registration cost is kept quite reasonable in an effort to make the congress as affordable as possible and to encourage a good attendance.
