Rift Valley Fever in Senegal

Translation  of  information received on 29 December 2004 from Dr Abdoulaye Bouna Niang, Director of Animal Production, Ministry of Agriculture, Dakar:

Date of the report: 29 December 2004.

Nature of diagnosis: clinical.

Date of initial detection of lesions/clinical signs: 15 November 2004.

Location  of  the  outbreak: Dagana department (in the northern part of the country).

Total number of animals in the outbreak: 35 extensively reared sheep.

Total number of cases: 5 abortions.

Control  measures:  due  to  the  lack of vaccines available, only farmers' awareness has been increased.
