SDLP Wants All-Island Move to Beat Scrapie

The SDLP wants an all island effort made to combat a new strain of scrapie, the sheep disease which is linked to BSE.

Agriculture spokesman PJ Bradley said farmers were deeply concerned about the disease.

"The realization a new strain of scrapie is emerging in Irish sheep is deeply worrying for farmers across the island."

"I am appealing for strong north-south co-operation to help contain this disease."

"Both the Irish and British governments must work together and spare no expense in addressing this problem. The whole farming community will want to see this situation resolved as soon as possible."
