Lamb and sheepmeat
producers in the region will be among the benefactors of a series of
resolutions finalized yesterday in Tamworth to improve the standing of
lamb in the United States market.
The Tri-Nations Lamb Group, which met at the Powerhouse Hotel, made a
significant step forward in developing a pilot scheme to increase lamb
consumption in a market where each American eats only 227 grams of lamb a
year.
The group met formally for the first time in October last year in
Washington and is an initiative of producer organizations in the US, New
Zealand and Australia. American Sheep Industry Association president Guy
Flora, from Ohio, said the market for lamb in the US needed to develop
greater awareness of the nutritional and health benefits of lamb.
He said if consumption of lamb could be increased to 1.5kg a head then
producers from the three nations would benefit greatly.
"The consumption of lamb [in the US] is a cultural problem," Mr.
Flora said.
