Michigan State Set to Open Hi-Tech Veterinary Clinics

Michigan State University is set to open two advanced medical care facilities for animals next year, including a cancer center that offers pets the same radiation therapy available to humans and a critical care facility for large animals.

Michigan State's veterinary school often is the last resort for veterinarians throughout the state who send animals there for surgery, chemotherapy and heart care. More than 22,600 animals were treated there during the last fiscal year, up 35 percent from a decade ago.

The $15 million, 26,000-square-foot Center for Comparative Oncology will supplement minimal modern treatment for many of the estimated 3.5 million dogs and cats across Michigan that contract cancer each year.
