Farmers who are objecting to Northern Ireland lambs being slaughtered in abattoirs in the Republic of Ireland are doing so on the basis of protecting their commercial interests and not because they are concerned about Foot-and-Mouth which they have claimed. There is absolutely no evidence that Foot and Mouth exists in Northern Ireland and the absence of individual tag numbers for each lamb has no bearing on the disease status. The truth is the Irish Government have introduced a system of identification for lambs in the South of Ireland which is not being implemented by the farmers because it is impossible to carry out.
