The United States Animal Health Associations (USAHA) 108^th Annual Meeting and the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) 47^th Annual Conference will be held Oct. 21-27, 2004, in Greensboro, N.C.

During the General Session, several U.S. government leaders in animal and public health will speak to the challenges facing the agricultural community in safeguarding animal and public health. The program for 2004 will feature a substantial number of presentations devoted to continuing the very important topic of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE), with current emphasis on BSE.

The annual USAHA Sheep and Goat Committee, chaired by Dr. Cindy Wolf, a sheep producer from Minnesota, will be meeting on Sunday, Oct. 24. Topics to be covered in this session range from an overview of small ruminant Johnes disease research and prion accumulation in sheep placenta to that of sheep identification projects and electronic ID findings.

Chair of the Scrapie Committee, Dr. Jim Logan, will also lead a session during the conference to provide an update on the scrapie program, the database and the slaughter surveillance and test validation study. Proposed changes to the Scrapie Uniform Methods and Rules (UM&R) will be reviewed and discussed. Dr. Logan is a member of the American Sheep Industry Association’s Animal Health Committee.
