More Sheep and Goats in the U.S.

All sheep and lamb inventory in the United States as of January 1, 2006 was 6.23 million head, up 2% from a year earlier. According to the National Ag Statistics Service (NASS), breeding inventory increased 2% to 4.64 million head, market sheep and lamb inventory declined 1% to 1.59 million head. The 2005 total lamb crop was 4.13 million, 1% more than in 2004.

Total wool production in the United States in 2005, 37.2 million pounds, down 1% from 2004. Average U.S. wool price was 71 cents per pound meaning a total wool crop value of $26.3 million, a 12% decline from 2004.
