  • FDA issues ruling on use of cephalosporin antimicrobial drugs

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA, the Agency) has issued an order prohibiting certain extralabel uses of cephalosporin antimicrobial drugs in certain food producing animals. The order was issued based on evidence that certain extralabel uses of these drugs in these animals will likely cause an adverse event in humans and , therefore, present a risk to the public health. Ruling becomes effective April 5, 2012.

  •  USDA Proposes to Allow Importation of Ovine Meat from Uruguay:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is proposing to amend regulations to allow, under certain conditions, the importation of fresh (chilled or frozen) ovine meat from Uruguay.

The proposed regulations would allow the importation of ovine meat while continuing to protect the United States from an introduction of foot-and-mouth disease, or FMD. The requirements for both ovine meat and beef would be nearly identical.
